Choosing Your Fall Family Outfits – San Bernardino Mountains, Ca
Fall is all about bundling up in lots of layers, enjoying the shift from hot to cool, and soaking up the sun and autumn foliage. This time of year for most photographers, is their busiest season. Cooler temps make for an easier and more comfortable experience for families when shooting sessions. Mother Nature puts on a spectacular show with the changing of leaves, setting up the perfect background for amazing photos. I always tell all my clients how important it is to dress according to each season and where you live. Today, I decided to try and help breakdown the process when choosing your fall family outfits into a few simple steps!
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Choose colors that won’t clash too much with the fall leaves. Instead, stick with a neutral palette of colors that blend seamlessly into autumn’s spectrum: earthy reds, burnt oranges, creamy nude, etc. Coordinate your family’s outfits instead of having everyone match perfectly. Wearing different shades of a color, will also help break things up if you prefer to not venture too far with coordinating.
Layering and add Accessories
Layer up! Don’t hesitate to throw on those scarves, cardigans, blazers or hats. Choosing to layer will also allow you to take pieces off without having to change your entire outfit. Have mom put on a jean jacket or hat for a few shots, then remove it for those close up cuddle pics. This gives your session lots of variation and mixes things up a bit.
Shoes Shoes Shoes
Wear shoes that fit the season. If it’s going to be 50 degrees the day of your shoot, sandals might not be the best choice. Think riding boots or comfy, fur-lined boots. Booties, ankle boots, and flats can also work perfectly too. Men usually wear a semi-casual boot or dressier tennis shoe for fall sessions. Little girls look adorable in cowgirl boots or ankle boots paired with a dress.
Patterns, Textures, Colors Oh My!
It’s 100% ok to mix patterns, textures, and colors when choosing your fall family outfits. Having everyone wear the same color or the exact same shirt tends to look dated and well…kinda boring. Give your pictures dimension by adding a floral print with a boldly knitted sweater. Have one boy wear a solid color shirt, while the other wears a relaxed henley with texture or a traditional button up.
